Amy Henderson – Conductor in Residence

Amy Henderson is an active young conductor emerging on the Canadian choral scene. Having been the beneficiary of a vibrant and supportive choral community as a young artist (where she was given her first experiences conducting the La Jeunesse Northumberland Youth Choirs and Orchestra) Amy now works to encourage choral communities in Montréal and enrich, through music, the lives of children, adolescents and adults.

She is the founder and director of Seraphim, an 18-voice ensemble of mixed adult voices, director of the McGill Conservatory Youth Choir for young singers between the ages of 12 and 18, and director of Les Muses, a young-women’s choir which serves the McGill community and downtown Montreal. As Conductor-in-Residence for the St. Lawrence Choir for 2011-2012, Amy helps prepare the choir for their busy performing season, including Rachmaninoff’sVespers, John Rutter’s Gloria, and Mozart’s Mass in C.

Ms. Henderson is a proud pedagogue, and believes in the importance of creating quality choral experiences for musicians of all ages. In her work as Associate Director of the Choeur des Enfants de Montreal, she works with a number of ensembles, including the Training Choir, which extends the choral experience to singers as young as 5 years old, and runs the Mentorship Program, which sees high school students from the Senior ensembles become active and conscientious leaders of the junior singers.

A graduate of McGill (B. Mus., B. Ed.,) and Memorial University of Newfoundland (M. Mus.), Amy Henderson has been generously supported and educated by the Canadian choral community, including invaluable experiences as Assistant Conductor of  Concerto Della Donna (Iwan Edwards), the EMSB Chorale (Patricia Abbott), and La Ceilagh (Nicholle Andrews). She has also studied privately and worked in masterclasses with Michael Zaugg.

While studying with Dr. Douglas Dunsmore at Memorial University, Amy was fortunate to work with many choirs in the St. John’s community, including Cantus Vocum, Newman Sound Men’s Choir, and the Philharmonic Choir of the Newfoundland Symphony Orchestra. She has also worked with conductors from across the globe, including Lydia Adams (Canada), Fred Sjöberg (Sweden), Dale Warland (USA), Jon Washburn (Canada), and Simon Carrington (Great Britain/USA).
