‘Tis the season, as they say. But what is the season without the (jingle) bells and thistle? Or without the traditions that make it so memorable?
As the clock ticks down to the Christmas holidays, many Montreal cultural institutions are working hard to find a way to share the joy of song, and dance, while respecting safety protocols and reaching audiences who could really use a pick-me-up right about now. Here’s a rundown of some holiday classics, and where — and in what format — to find them.

Bien qu’il soit toujours impossible de prévoir une date pour le retour sur scène, Philippe Bourque, directeur artistique du Chœur St-Laurent, ne chôme pas ! En fait, la saison 2020-21 est des plus importantes, car elle sert d’envol pour les célébrations du 50e anniversaire du Chœur, en 2022.
En septembre, les choristes se retrouveront donc, de façon virtuelle, avec une série d’ateliers variés incluant la formation auditive, la technique vocale, la littérature chorale et bien entendu, la répétition du répertoire des concerts à venir.
Le Chœur St-Laurent est fier d’annoncer que Nila Rajagopal est la première lauréate du Programme de mentorat Iwan Edwards, que le conseil d’administration a créé en l’honneur de son chef-fondateur.
Chanter la magie des Fêtes à Lachine

Les voix du Chœur Saint-Laurent résonneront dans l’église des Saints-Anges de Lachine à l’occasion de leur concert Noël céleste. Dans le cadre de sa tournée «De clocher en clocher», la troupe présentera un répertoire varié et teinté de la magie des Fêtes.
Ce seront plus de 18 œuvres qui seront au programme, le samedi 30 novembre, dont deux à trois tirées directement des classiques de Noël, en anglais comme en français. Parmi ces morceaux, il sera notamment possible d’entendre Star Carol, de John Rutter, Sun of Righteousness, de Healey Willan et L’annonce, de la Montréalaise Marie-Claire Saindon.

Soprano fort appréciée du public et professeure de chant au Conservatoire de musique de Montréal, la talentueuse Aline Kutan sera la soliste du prochain concert du Chœur St-Laurent, dédié à la musique de Francis Poulenc. Elle est notre Artiste de la semaine.
Au programme du concert : le Gloria et le Stabat Mater de Poulenc.

The St Lawrence Choir’s mixed voice ensemble under the direction of Phillipe Bourque could not have chosen a more fitting venue for their performance of their programme Slava!, which means “glory” in Ukrainian. The space itself did honour to the multitude of tonalities of the a cappella programme of Eastern Orthodox liturgical music performed by the choir, now in its 46th year. […]
The atmosphere set by the choir was nothing short of divine, and it was evident by those around me and the choristers that I was not the only one who was able to escape into an unearthly place filled with some type of deeper meaning.

Le Chœur St-Laurent lance une nouvelle série « De clocher en clocher » dont le premier concert, Slava! aura lieu le 17 novembre, à 19 h 30, dans la magnifique cathédrale ukrainienne orthodoxe de Sainte-Sophie. Le concert Slava! sera une occasion unique de découvrir un répertoire méconnu et bouleversant, en plus de réentendre les célèbres Vêpres de Rachmaninov.

The final concert of the Ottawa Choral Society season on June 1 welcomes the St. Lawrence Choir of Montreal for a performance of Mozart’s Requiem and the Davide Penitente. WHAT YOU MISSED:
Marc Hervieux presented mostly Christmas classics such as Minuit Chrétien, Sainte Nuit, Panis Angelicus, using his resonant voice with ease and nailing every note. Under choirmaster Philippe Bourque, the St. Lawrence Choir’s performance of “Magnus Misteryum” for a capella choir was the jewel of the night. It had unconventional harmonies and delicious nuances.

In 1846, when Felix Mendelssohn conducted the commissioned premiere of his oratorio Elijah for the Birmingham Festival he presided over an orchestra of one hundred and twenty five musicians, ten soloists, and a chorus of four hundred singers. Mendelssohn was in his mid thirties. Fast-forward one hundred and seventy years, and another conductor in his mid- thirties will direct one of the most popular oratorios of the choral repertoire. On March 9, for the 45th anniversary of the St. Lawrence Choir, its Artistic Director Philippe Bourque will debut his first Elijah.
